Rio offers a diverse selection of accommodation that includes everything from budget brands to deluxe international properties, from privately owned boutique properties to youth hostels. You can choose from a small two-star hotel or hotel in the back streets of Copacabana, Flamengo or even Ipanema, for less than $25-a-night or the opulent luxury of the suites at the top deluxe hotels for which you won’t see much change from a thousand dollars or pounds or more for a night.
Tourist areas along the beach front offer the option of large, sophisticated, resort properties belonging to internationally known brands, such as Fairmont, Grand Hyatt, Hilton, Sheraton, Pullman and Radisson, Brazilian and international chain hotels, as well as the smaller, privately owned establishments, known as ‘pousadas’, that may only have two or three rooms or as many as 30 or more, and be either very simple, or despite being ranked three stars, super sophisticated.
International brands operating in Rio or about to open include Accor, Belmond (ex-Orient Express), Best Western, Fairmont, Golden Tulip, Grand Hyatt, Hilton, Ibis, Marriott, Mercure, Novotel, Pestana, Prodigy, Pullman, Radisson, Ramada, So, Sofitel, Sol Meliá, Starwood and Yoo, while Brazilian hoteliers include Atlântica, Emiliano, Fasano, Othon, and Windsor, to name just a few.
The price of hotel accommodation in Rio is not listed on this site because prices remain volatile and the actual rack rates, the posted rates in the hotels, more often than not have little or no baring on what you will actually pay if you contact the hotel in advance, include your accommodation in an overall package, or go to one of the big internet reservation sites. Although they may not offer the best prices, check the big booking sites like Expedia, Last Minute, etc, to give yourself a ball park figure on prices, and remember you often get good discounts with them if you book flight and hotlel.
Worth noting that Rio’s hotel industry does not revolve around the European or North American visitors, because the vast majority of visitors who come to stay in the city and state are from the other South American countries or from Brazil itself, especially São Paulo.
Hotels operate on their local reputation and because of this you tend to get what you pay for. Prices in Rio are a fairly accurate guide to the degree of comfort you can expect and the facilities that go along with it. Price also reflects the hotel’s location so that normally for the same amount of money you can stay in a better hotel two blocks back from the beach than those in the same price bracket on the oceanfront. Most properties, including the smallest pousadas, will probably have a web site with a good selection of images and the latest prices.
When choosing your hotel accommodation do not be mistaken into thinking that Copacabana is the “be all and end all” of Rio. The distances between Copacabana, Ipanema and Leme are relatively small and all are within easy reach of the city center. Each area has its own pluses and minuses.
More visitors are also now considering the hotels in Flamengo and the city center as the metro links them quickly to Copacabana and Ipanema oand on out to Barra da Tijuca. The hotels furthest from the city center, are the hotels in São Conrado and Barra da Tijuca. These hotels, however, are the closest to the city’s main exhibition center, Riocentro, and the Olympic Park, as well as all the activities in Barra itself. The massive shopping centres making it a popular base and choice for other Latin American visitors, while the extension of the metro is starting to attract Europeans.
