Rio de Janeiro is already starting to see the benefits from the demolition of an extremely ugly raised highway, the Perimetral, that ran along the bay and through the heart of the dock and historic area of the city. A new tunnel, part of the Porto Maravilha project,  was opened on 1 March, the 450th anniversary of the city, that is now handling and hiding much of the traffic that used the freeway.
